We are a couple that live in the house with a few rooms that would otherwise not be used. We live two floors away from most of the rentable rooms. Renting the rooms gives us a sense of pride and we do our best to make sure it's great for everyone.
The tenants in the house are usually recent college grads in their 20s of mixed sex with bright futures ahead of them. A cantankerous and fiscally struggling divorcee in their 40s is unlikely to have gotten voted into the house, as a single no vote from anyone is means we have to refund the $50 which otherwise goes towards one's security deposit.
Speaking of which, only three tenants over the past few years didn't get their entire security deposit on their last day while they were still present. One got it 10 minutes after leaving because I had covid so I was trying to minimize contact. Another was a woman who was past due on her rent. The last one got it but it was delayed by about a week as we tried to see if the carpet could be cleaned with a steam cleaner. (It was cleanable, so there wasn't any deduction needed.)
Housemates tend to stay from several months to a few years. You just need to give two weeks' notice here (nothing is worse than on being stuck a long-term lease forcing you to live with someone that nobody gets along with). One reason people probably stay so much longer than this is because there is a non-refundable $100 room cleaning fee that has to be paid before you could move in.
This makes it more expensive to stay for relatively short periods.

Greetings! This is an ad for room with a private bathroom furnished as shown in the pictures. (The pictures were taken in 2024.)
Location: We are a ~12-minute walk from the Wheaton stop on the red line of the DC Metro, just north of the DC Beltway (I-495). Union Station, in downtown DC, is a 22-minute ride from Wheaton. NIH is a 11-minute drive. A 13-minute RideOn Route 34 also works. Metro buses Q1, Q2, Q4, Q5, and Q6 get you to downtown (northern) Rockville. Catholic University is a 15 minute metro ride. A Safeway grocery store is right at the metro, and we're within walking distance to the biggest shopping complex on the metro (including Target, Costco, Giant Food, Macys, 80 nearby restaurants, and 16 bars).
About the neighborhood --- Silver Spring, the surrounding area, was recently (2024) ranked #1 on Forbes as the very best city to live in all of America for families. However, Kensington is generally thought of as a much better area. (It is actually too small to qualify for their metrics and it wasn't even on the dropdown here.) The neighborhood is about the safest in the DC area, with 21% the violent crime rate of DC and 60% that of Bethesda. It's sad to hear of crime, but when you hear of it, it's almost never here.
The room has a queen bed, desk, keyed lock for extra security, dresser, fridge, a closet with an iron and ironing board, and ensuite bathroom. However, if you are on a budget the bathroom and room can be re-configured to not have the ensuite bathroom. The price is for the cheapest configuration.
There's central AC and heat to whatever temperature you want. Everything not new in the room was washed, including the pillows.
House details: As the summer ends a few rooms will be opening up.
This is one of them. There are more expensive and luxurious options, including one with a private entrance and another private (ensuite) bathroom. There's access to a working fireplace, weight room, and laundry room. The kitchen has most of the gadgets you blissfully but mistakenly thought you'd use. All of the dishes are sterilized and placed back. This allows the sink to be empty almost all of the time. All of the common areas are cleaned regularly; there would not be any chores you'd need to do or worry about. There's a deck, outdoor grill, hammock, and flower garden. There are also a guest room and a movie room for entertaining.
House atmosphere: If you are an extrovert feel free to join us in our occasional game nights.
Voting rights: Being a highly democratic house, we are able to vote about various issues including who can next move in. This voting process takes less than 24 hours, but requires paying $50 towards the security deposit. It's refunded if you are rejected by anyone, but if we all say yes and you decide on to live elsewhere, it isn't refunded. So, please don't pay until you've verified that this place is your favorite.
Contact: All inquiries will still be answered or responded to within 2 hours of daylight, so if there is no response within 2 hours, try again, as we definitely did not get your message or you didn't get our response. This is true even if it isn't a good match.
